We The People

Today is inauguration day in the United States. So maybe it would be appropriate to say a few words about our elected officials, not just President Trump.

I live in Canada, so I am an outsider looking in. However what I am writing about I think applies just as well south of the border.

President Trump certainly has polarized a nation like no other president in recent memory. Regardless of which side you are on, he is now officially in office.

The democratic electoral systems put in place may not be perfect, but they have guided our countries for centuries very successfully. I think the alternatives leave less to be desired, so, for the most part, we have a good system.

Knowing this should we perhaps not focus on having won or lost an election, but supporting the current administration. We need to act with integrity and treat one another with respect. This includes our elected officials.

Their jobs are hard enough without us reminding them every day how incompetent they are or how bad a job they are doing. That is the easy road. The harder road is to support them.

This, of course, does not mean you need to drink the cool-aid. In fact, even if you voted for the current administration, they will make decisions that we will disagree with.

We need to actively engage our governments in different ways and at the various levels. Remembering that need the “people” just as much as we need them.

So instead of bashing Trump or in my case Trudeau, why not say a kind word and wish them a successful term. I don’t think they woke up this morning, looked in the mirror and said: “how can I run this country into the ground”. No, they too want to see our countries prosper and grow.

Take the high road today and thank your elected officials for the hard work that they do on your behalf. That’s not easy, but it’s worth doing. Maybe get involved too.

You Got This!
