Just the other day someone told me there is a statue of a male guitar player on a corner in Winslow, Arizona.
The 1972 song ’Take it Easy’ was written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey. It was performed by the Eagles. The second verse made the town somewhat famous.
Well, I’m a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see It’s a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin’ down to take a look at me Come on, baby, don’t say maybe I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me We may lose and we may win though we will never be here again so open up, I’m climbin’ in, so take it easy.
The song was reported to have come about as a result of Jackson Browne’s vehicle breaking down while driving through Winslow.
In fact, when Interstate 40 replaced Route 66 there was a downturn in the economy in Winslow. But the popularity of the song is said to have renewed interest once again in the town.
Who knew one little song could have such an impact on a small town – <10,000 people – after all these years. What a great little story.
