I have been doing Crossfit for just over a year. I love every aspect of it and am glad I decided to try it after doing high intensity training for almost 10 years.

One of the things that I had noticed early on was people would rip open callus’ on their hands while doing certain workouts which had a lot of reps for a specific exercise. This worried me a little as I had “soft” office hands at the time.

Fast forward a year and I do have callus’ on my hands from the workouts, but have managed to stay away from ripping them open – until this week. It was a longer workout and one of the bar movements would total 100 reps. It seems this was enough to rip open one of my callus’.

It was not painful at the time and did not bleed a lot. It happened about halfway through the workout, and I was still able to finish with a good time. The pain of course came afterward as I trimmed the excess skin and washed the wound, however it is healing nicely.

I kind of look at this as a right of passage in Crossfit similar to the first time I was able to do a WOD as prescribed (RX). Thankfully I only workout 3x a week, but it has hampered my daily rowing a bit.

Here’s hoping that it is at least another year before I tear another one open.
