One of the goals that I set for 2017 is to read more. More being almost 4 times what I’ve done in previous years. On average I read about 5-6 books per year. This year the commitment is to read at least 20.

Six weeks in and the book count already stands at 4 with 3 others currently being read. Based on this it should not be too hard to hit the target by mid-summer.

Most of the books that I read are non-fiction, but every now and then I slip in the occasional legal thriller. Reading quickly is not my forte as I cannot skim and need to read most every word. But that does not stop me from reading more than one book at a time.

My reading patterns are fairly predictable. In the morning I read while on the train to work. The evening sees me read for 20-30 minutes before bed. Occasionally I will slip in some weekend reading or lunchtime reading during the week.

For those of you who are really into reading, I found a great site called GoodReads – check them out.

There is no shortage of material that I want to read. In fact, there are about 30-40 books waiting for me. You see I have always loved buying books with the intention of reading them, but have never made it a priority.

So now instead of sleeping on the train or playing video games on the weekends, I am investing a little more time into my reading. I know there are benefits to reading like increased vocabulary, better writing skills, etc.

And in case you are wondering I prefer a physical book over an e-book. I have both, but I like to turn real pages, feel it in my hands and take in the distinct smell of printed pages.
