On Mondays I golf with a group of friends. Today was that day. I was getting prepared – made sure I had enough golf balls, washed the ones I recently found and put my clubs in the car trunk.

What happened next put a little damper on the day. I got a text from the host and they said golf was off as they needed to cut hay. They are a farmer.

To put it plainly they needed to “make hay while the sun shines”.

This little idiom is still used today to act while an opportunity exists or to take action while a situation is favourable.

Today and for many days now the weather has been dry (favourable) and so it was time to cut the hay. My earlier dissapointment was misplaced and I am glad that hay can be cut.
