As the New Year is now in full swing I too am busy looking at what my next challenge / steps will be in my life. After taking 6 months off to “semi-retire” it is now time to get back to something a little more structured on a day to day basis.
One of the things I am finding is that when I try to make a concerted effort to do some heads down work at home it usually falls flat. I think the biggest reason for this is that home has in many ways represents not being at work. So when I try to focus on what’s next I find myself distracted.
This is not to say that I cannot get any work done towards my goal of re-entering the workforce, but many times it gets sidetracked by something else. I do not have a home office, so I sit on the couch – not good. The TV is always nearby and begging me to turn it on. My portable gaming console says “pick me up I’m ready”. Too many potential distractions.
To combat this I’ve decided to get out of the house to do some of my work. I’ve done it a few times now and find that it seems to help me get focused. I am very thankful for public WiFi, coffee shops and libraries that I can go to for a few hours.
So for now I am changing it up every now and then to help fight against the distractions I find at home.
