Audience Of One

Have you ever heard the phrase “dance like no one is watching?” Well, this week I was once again reminded that I need to write like no one is reading.

I started this journey of writing every day almost 3 months ago. I have not missed a day yet. When I started the goals were not the clearest. One of the things I had hoped was to gain the attention of others over time. I’d hoped that they would become permanent readers.

Since this was the case I have been a little obsessed with how many people visit the site. I’ve got analytics installed to keep track of this and check them on a daily basis. But as I was reading (viewing) this week numbers can be insidious when we fixate on them. There is a lot of truth to that.

You see I would get real excited when the numbers were high. Believe me high for a new site is 5 a day. And then I would get anxious when the numbers were low – no one visiting even. But this week too I was reminded of who I should really be writing for. Me.

You see an audience of one keeps the expectations low. There is no real pressure to have sharable content that attracts 100’s of visitors because the only visitor essentially (that matters) is you. I know that I need to get back to this.

Over the past 90 days, I’ve reflected a few times in the process. The one thing I really need to remind myself is that first and foremost I am writing for me. This is not always easy and takes some discipline. I am hoping the longer I do this the more it is just for me.

I’m not going to play the what if game. Sure this could become something bigger in the future. Maybe I’m the next internet superstar – maybe not. But for now, I am going to focus on writing for an audience of one.
